Tips for using Laptop in hot & warm weather

Follow these tips to take proper care of your laptop; in warm and hot weather:

1. Safe Temperature Range: Most laptop computers operate properly in the safe temperature range of 50 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit or 10 to 35 degrees Celsius. Keep in mind that when bringing a laptop in from the warm hot air, the laptop must cool down to the interior temperature before you use it. By the same token if you use your laptop outdoors, then let the laptop warm up to the outside temperature before starting it up.

2.
Hot Cars: Just as you wouldn’t leave people or animals in a car in hot weather, you should not leave your laptop and other mobile gear either. Leaving your laptop closed in a vehicle in hot temperatures will cause damage to your laptop. The heat is not good for the internal components or the external casings.

3. Bright Sun: Never leave your laptop where it is exposed to direct sunlight, whether it is in use or shut down. If you must use your laptop outside in bright conditions you can use either

a laptop glare screen which cuts down on the glare caused by the sun or a laptop hood which cuts down on the amount of light directed at the laptop display.

4. Humidity: In warm weather people are fond of saying it’s not the heat itself that bothers them but the dreaded humidity. Humidity is the amount of moisture in the air and the recommended safe range of relative humidity is 10-80%. Moisture can cause damage to the internal components of a laptop and you may not even realize that the damage has occurred.5. Take it Out

If you use your laptop in hot temperatures consider using a removable hard drive to store your data on. This way you can help protect your data and ensure that your removable hard drive stays protected from exposure to heat and the sun.

6. Weather Watching: In warm, hot weather there are more storms, often with little or no warning and more severe weather occurrences which mobile professionals must face when traveling. Equipment to help protect your mobile gear includes having surge protectors, power invertors and spare batteries. External battery charges that don’t require an electrical connection are another wise investment.

7. Keep it Cool: Use a laptop stand to disperse heat that your laptop generates. Laptop stands are available in a variety of styles to suit your working needs. There are laptop stands which include fans to help dissipate the heat and keep your laptop working at its best.

8. Pack it Wisely: Using a properly fitted and well-padded laptop case for your mobile gear will help keep it insulated against heat, moisture and direct sunlight. When buying your laptop case make sure all your mobile gear will fit securely and be protected from the effects of weather.

Take Control Over Control Panel

You know, there are lots of applets in the control panel. Applet means the icon you see whenever you enter into the control panel. But you may not need all those applets. Even it is odd to see many unnecessary applets in the control panel or it may take some time to find your desired applet. You can easily remove unnecessary applet and set you control panel by keeping only your necessary applets, but how? Follow the steps below.

First choose "Run" from "Start" menu.

Then type "regedit" & press Enter. a. Now expand "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" then expand "Control Panel". Under the control panel you see a section named "don't load". b. Click On that section, you see some commands in the right window. In this right window you have to add applet command which you want to hide/remove from the control panel. c. Just right click on that window and select "NEW", then select "String Value". Now double click on the "New Value #1" to edit the string. d. Change the value name as the commands like "appwiz.cpl" and Value Data as "No". e. Now you need to restart the windows to make the editing take effect. Don't be worried, you can always recover it by deleting this command later.

Make Windows (XP, Vista or 7) shutdown quickly

The fastest way to shut down Windows is to press the power button. Not a good idea, of course, but it is quick. When that method gives you a wake-up call by the suddon loss of data, you might want to consider another alternative. One good solution is to reprogram your system’s power button to exit Windows, without any prompts (except to save unsaved work, as needed) and then shutdown.

To do this: In XP, open Control Panel. In the ‘Performance and Maintenance‘ section, pick Power Options. Click the Advanced tab.

Under ‘When I press the power button on my computer’, select Shut down. Then click OK. In Vista, click the Start button, type power options, and press Enter. In the upper left, click Choose what the power buttons do. Next to ‘When I press the power button’, select Shut down.

You could also leave the setting at the default Sleep option, which can save you time when you power the PC on. Finally, click Save Changes. You may use the “classic start menu” since Vista makes no sense, then click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and then Power Options. That will put you at the same screen to access the “When I press the power button” settings. Now you can enjoy faster shutdown.

There is an alternative.... If you feel that your PC takes too much time shutting down, then here is a trick to shutdown your windows operating system quickly.

Steps

1. Go to Start —> Run and type “regedit” to open Regeditor

2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER —> Control Panel —> Desktop.

3. Set the key “AutoEndTasks” value to 1.

How to keep your computer running smoothly

Follow the Tips below to Keep your Computer Running Smoothly:

1. Never turn your computer off with the power switch until Windows has shut down. The one exception to this rule is when your computer locks up and your hard drive is not running (hard drive light is not blinking). In this situation, you can turn the power off without harmful effects to the hard drive. As cutting the power can also result in lost data or Windows files, you should only do this when you have to.

Following this rule will prevent permanent hard drive defects caused by the hard drive heads contacting the surface of the drive disc, and it will prevent a host of Windows problems. Whenever possible, recover from crashes by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys at the same time. Press them again to reboot your computer.

2. I highly recommend that you purchase an UPS (uninteruptable power supply) for your computer. This will keep your computer from crashing during power outages, and will protect your computer from low and high voltage occurrences. An UPS is far superior to a surge protector and will save your computer from almost any type of power disaster. (See #1 above for what happens when your computer crashes.)

3. Backup any data you cannot afford to lose to at least two separate physical drives. So backup data to external hard drives, Zip disks, CD-RWs etc. The time to backup is when you create something you can't afford to lose. Don't wait until tomorrow.

4. Run Scandisk and Defragment at least once a month. This will keep your hard drive healthy and prevent crashes.

5. Never unplug peripherals from the computer when it is powered up. Unplugging with the power on can short out the connector socket or the motherboard. The only exception to this rule is if you know a peripheral is "hot pluggable". If you do not know what "hot pluggable" means then ignore this exception.

6. Do keep at least 300 MBs of your C: drive free for Windows to use. If you use Windows XP or Vista then you should have 400-600 MBs of free space on your C: drive. If you do not have enough free space you will choke Windows and it will start dumping data to your hard drive, or it will just get really, really, slow. Use the ADD/Delete tool in the Windows Control Panel to delete unneeded programs from your drive. Do not delete shared files unless you back them up.

7. Do not let a lot of programs load up when you start your computer. They use valuable memory and Windows Resources (Windows internal workspace). All programs in your Windows System Tray (in the lower left of your screen) are running on your computer. Close them if you don't need them or run them and configure them not to load when you boot up. Other programs running in the background can be found by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the same time.

8. Do use a virus checker regularly. Everyone should use a virus checker. The best type of protection is continuous monitoring from a dedicated anti-virus program. The second best thing is to use is the free online virus checkers such as AVG.

9. If you have a high speed Internet connection you need a firewall program. A firewall program keeps those who want to hijack your computer from gaining access to your system. You really do not want someone else running your computer. Case in point: When I am online 10 hours or more with my DSL connection, my computer is usually attacked by a hacker at least once. Do not think you are safe from hackers!! Hackers use search programs to seek out computers at random. Keep your windows firewall on always.

10. Keep track of the software disks you receive with your computer and new peripherals. These disks contain valuable software drivers and programs for Windows and are needed when Windows must be reloaded. Keep these disks and your Windows software disks in a safe, dry, place -- you never know when you will need them.

How to keep a PC running at peak performance

These routine maintenance tips will keep your computer running at peak performance.

With the amount of information available for download on the internet, it's easy to quickly fill up your valuable hard drive space and turn your computer into a sluggish, unresponsive monster. Keeping your hard drive clean is essential to the high performance that the latest computers can achieve. You can discover how much hard drive space is available on your computer by accessing the DriveSpace program in your System Tools.

A pie graph will show you the amount of used and unused space for each of your drives. Check this often to keep an idea of how much space you are using. There are six simple steps to clearing up your hard drive:

1. Uninstall unused programs. Many times a new program will come along that looks fun to have or play with, but after a week or two you simply stop using it. These programs clutter up your drive and take up valuable space. You might be tempted to delete these programs from your drive, but doing so will cause problems. You must use the uninstall function of Windows for the program to be removed safely and completely.

2. Clean out temporary files. When your computer is not shut down properly, it will pass information from memory into fragmented files. Also, while you are running programs, your computer will write information that it does not immediately need into temporary files. Installation files will also expand themselves into the temporary folder and will not always clean up after themselves. You can delete these temporary files safely by using the Disk Cleanup option in your System Tools.

3. Empty your internet cache. As you surf the internet your computer stores web pages and images into a temporary internet cache so that it can quickly recall and access information when you move back and forth between pages. This backup information can quickly add up and eat hard drive space. Whether you use Internet Explorer, Netscape, or one of the many other browsers available, emptying out your cache is quick and easy. Simply follow the instructions in the Help files located within those programs. You may also wish to set a specific maximum file size for your cache folder, so that it is not allowed to run rampant.

4. Empty your mail programs of clutter. It's easy to browse through your email and leave old messages there, promising yourself you'll sort them out later. One or two messages don't take up much space, but hundreds certainly do. Take the time to sort through these old emails now and delete what is not important. Create folders and organize what is left. Make it a habit that when new emails come in, they are either filed immediately or thrown away. Set your email program to empty your deleted items folder each time you close your mail program.

5. Empty your recycle bin. Once you've emptied your drive of cluttering, unnecessary programs; empty your recycle bin to remove what has been placed there in the process.

6. Scandisk and Defrag. When Windows installs programs, it will put the files it needs anywhere that it finds free space, and not directly after the last program installed. As a result, your hard drive has patches of empty space on it that are not big enough to fit a full program, and will result in a drive space error if you attempt to install something new. Scandisk your drive to check for lost file fragments and to fix any errors it finds, then Defrag to pack all of the program files together at the beginning of your drive. This will clear out those empty patches and move all of the free space you've just created to the end of your drive.

7. Last but not the least, now that you've got it clean, keep it that way. Perform this quick maintenance routine every week. For your work computer, Friday afternoon before you leave for the weekend is the perfect time. When you return to work on Monday, you'll have a computer that is clutter-free and as responsive as it should be. Organize your surfing habits. Direct all of your downloads to the same folder, so that you can easily find them and delete them when necessary, or move them to zip disks for storage. Keep track of the programs that you install. For trial versions, note the date that they will expire on a calendar. This will remind you to uninstall the programs that you can no longer use rather than allowing them to clutter up your drive. Also, if you run into problems, keeping track of new downloaded and installed programs and the date they were installed can help you track down the cause of problems. Remember that the cleaner your hard drive is, the better your machine will respond! In order for your computer to be user friendly, it must have a friendly user. Be your computer's best friend and clean out the cobwebs regularly.

LASTAR – Set Loudness Of Music, Reduce Noise, And Normalize Recorded Audio

Want to tweak with audio loudness and apply other normalization effects over your music collection?LASTAR is a batch audio processor which can boost and set loudness of audio tracks to required level while applying normalization across all of your music or recorded files. Furthermore, it can split long recorded sessions with a simple click. Along with setting loudness and gaining normalization, it can be used to eradicate noise among all specified music tracks to achieve better sound quality. Noise elimination comes handy for processing those audio files which were recorded through very sensitive microphones. LASTAR supports both widely used audio formats – MP3 and WAV, with all bitrates. It is capable of doing analysis of inserted audio files to set the most appropriate sound quality parameters for processing.
According to developer, it allows user to split and normalize digitized analog tapes and vinyl. You could perform dynamic reduction through it to listen to music or recordings in a noisy environment, big auditoriums, cars, etc. Since the quality of audio tracks can’t be compromised at any stage of processing, it is programmed to perform all the above actions over audio files without losing the sound quality.
To begin, launch the application and drop as many audio files as you want over the main interface. It will automatically detect the kind (genre) of music files in order to set the best processing parameters. Underneath, the pull-down menu, there are 3 Output levels which you can change to customize the quality parameters, including, Quiet, Compression, and Noise Level.

Use Google Apps On Desktop With GMDesk

The most popular web app provider is Google and you can see yourself spending countless hours on Gmail, Google Calendear, Google Maps, Google Reader, and Picasa Web Albums every day. It is not uncommon to see opened windows with theses web apps everywhere as more and more people rely on the cloud.
GMDesk is an open source Adobe Air based application that opens Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Maps, Google Reader and Picasa Web Albums on the desktop. It therefore, eliminates the needs to use a browser to access numerous Google services. There are few reasons why it makes sense to use them on the desktop instead of the browser. Suppose you are working on a thesis in Google Docs or reading news items in Google Reader and your browser crashes immediately, what about your work? Also would you risk losing your work to restarting browser just because of one add-on? Saving work across multiple services can be a daunting task too. It makes more sense to place them permanently on the desktop, than to find them across multiple tabs inside a web browser.
After launching the app, it redirects you to a Google login page. All Google web applications can be accessed with a single click via the Google Applications menu. Selecting a Google app from this menu redirects the user to it.
Google Docs - Home
To configure GMDesk options, go to GMDesk –> Preferences, from where, you can select a Google Service to login with when GMDesk starts and/or specify a Google apps Domain.
Preferences
GMDesk is not a feature rich app, it is basically takes the web apps and put them on the desktop. If you are looking for accessing all Google apps from within a single application, you can give it a try. Being an Adobe Air app, it works on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Tag Mp3 Music Tracks Automatically With MusicBrainz Picard

MusicBrainz Picard
Do you have a huge music library where hundreds of audio tracks are untagged? Tagging music tracks is necessary especially if you listen to music on portable audio players, as many of them read tag information directly rather than original file name. MusicBrainz Picard claims to be the next generation audio tagging application, which is developed to help users tag huge music archive in a snap. The distinctive part is that it can scan through music files for Audio Fingerprints a.k.a PUIDs (Portable Unique IDentifier) in order to search and replace existing tag information with correct ones. It also comes with CD Lookup feature to extract information from optical music discs while Lookup function allows user to look for the meta tags of selected music file from MusicBrainz page.
First off, either add a music folder or manually select music files from different locations to populate the list. Once imported, select the track to view current tag information on the left side. The main interface is divided into two panes to view your music tracks with current tags, and albums with suggested tag information on the other side. The bottom pane holds two boxes for Original and Metadata at each end.
To begin tagging, select the audio file from left side. Now click Lookup to let MusicBrainz find out the best match. Tagging can be performed in batch mode by scanning multiple files for PUIDs. To scan the files, select those with incorrect correct tag information, and click Scan on toolbar. It will start listing down the albums from where tracks belong to and tag them with correct meta data. When all the selected music files have been tagged, it will remove them from the list, indicating that tagging has been performed. You can also verify the newly added / replaced meta information by selecting music file in Windows Explorer.
scan
If you want to scan a single audio file, just select it from the list, click Scan to verify  the track information listed under corresponding album in right pane, and click Save on the toolbar. During testing, it tagged 30 songs in less than a minute by grabbing the correct tag information from online resources. The application is extensible. On the product page, you will find plugins to pull out tag information from last.fm, download album cover arts, and to capitalize first letter of tag information.
It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

J7Z Is 7-Zip With New GUI And Profiles Support

7Zip despite being an excellent tool for archiving data, does not include profiles and lists. By using archiving profiles and lists, you can lessen the overall effort to archive or extract files to a pre-selected directory. J7Z is an alternative open source GUI of 7Zip that enables users to create custom profiles for saving and extracting archives. By default, it comes with five different profiles, whereas users can create additional profiles as well. The pre-defined profiles include the Default profile, Flash (profile for saving archives to a flash drive), Local (for saving data to local drives), Remote (for saving archives to a remote location) and Storage (for saving archives to any kind of  storage device e.g. external drive).
To create an archive, right-click on a file or folder and select a profile to create the archive to, e.g. default, Flash, Remote, Storage, etc or click on Custom to create a custom profile from the GUI interface. You can also extract an archive in a similar way.
Create Archives
Alternatively, you can open the GUI and specify an algorithm type e.g. 7-Zip, G-Zip, Zip, etc. Moreover, the compression ratio can also be changed to fastest, fast, normal, maximum, or ultra. Optionally a password can also be specified for the archive that is to be created.
specs
Now move to Locations tab and specify a directory to save the archive (if not compressing via right-click context menu) and click Create to create the archive.
locations
Make sure that you save your profile from Profile –> Save. If you want to customize a profile first, then open it from Profile -> Load.
Select Profile
To summarize the process, you can either directly save the archive to a specified location by using profiles via right-click context menu or go to the GUI to specify additional details such as algorithm type, compression ratio, password, directory to save the data to, and click Create to create the archive. The same approach applies for extracting archive(s).
Creating Archive
While the archives are extracted to a pre-defined location, the directory tree is preserved.
backup
J7Z is a Java app, therefore the default skin is not appealing. Make sure you change the skin to ‘Windows’ from Options. It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Change Intel Core 2 & Core i3, i5, i7 Default CPU Throttling Scheme With ThrottleStop

You might have heard about CPU overclocking which is, generally, referred to as using full CPU speed and resources to boost CPU processing time up to the highest level attainable. Overclocking is something which has been both lauded and discouraged. The reason being that it increases CPU processing time but consumes more power than normal, which means your system can quickly heat up, causing some serious damage to CPU, Motherboard, and other hardware components. CPU throttling is opposite of overclocking. It makes CPU conserve power and can be applied on laptops. CPU manufacturers apply some throttling schemes in CPUs which are to be used in laptop PCs, so they can consume less battery power.
ThrottleStop is developed to modify and monitor performance of Intel Core 2, Core i3, i5, and i7 processing units. It allows you to tweak with default CPU throttle scheme, so you can make use of CPU resources according to your requirements.
Important Note: It is highly advisable that you should not tweak with CPU throttling schemes without having complete knowledge, as doing so may cause some serious system havoc.
For user’s convenience, it offers 4 profiles to quickly jump between different throttle settings, such as, Performance, Game, Internet, and Battery. You can change the default profile settings according to your CPU and hardware specs.
To begin, just launch the application and configure settings for Clock Modulation, Chipset Clock Mod, and Multiplier. Moreover, you can toggle CPU Turbo, C States, More Data, Power Saver options On/Off. The current CPU state is shown in the main window. Before clicking Turn On button to run customized CPU throttle scheme, choose the profile which best suits your work needs.
ThrottleStop 2.99.6 - Monitoring Only
The application can be minimized to system tray, letting you enable and disable ThrottleStop active scheme and switch between available profiles.

Check Data Fragmentation Level And Defrag Drives With My Defragmenter

It is always advised to analyze system drives for data fragmentation before starting off with defragmentation process. Unfortunately, both Windows Vista and Windows 7 native defrag tools can’t recommend drives which have to go through defragmentation process for gaining quicker access. To quickly check drives and perform data defragmentation, try My Defragmenter – an application with dead simple usage. It is however not comparable with previously covered Defraggler by Piriform in terms of features but can be used to quickly check which drives need defragmentation. It analyzes your auxiliary storage drives to check whether data defragmentation will do any good or not. If you don’t not sure what is data defragmentation, it is a process of arranging data contiguously in order to increase the access time. With My Defragmenter, you can schedule defragmentation to run the process at defined intervals.
The main interface presents all the system drives with general information about the disk space and last defrag results. Before performing defragmentation of selected drive(s), click Analyze to check whether disk defragmentation is required or not.

We recommend analyzing all the system drives to find current fragmentation status. After the disk analysis is finished, it will show you the data fragmentation percentage while showing which drives need defragmentation. Now select the suggested drive(s) and click Defragment to begin the process.

After defragmentation is complete, check the drives again to view the level of data fragmentation. To schedule the defrag process, click Scheduler and set time to defrag disk at defined time. It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

6 Small And Useful Portable Applications That You Should Always Carry Around

Are you always carrying a USB Flash Drive around? If yes then you can get a lot of useful applications on your USB drive instead of just carrying them around with backup files. I have gathered 6 applications that will transform your USB drive into a power device for doing tasks ultra quickly on the go.

Note: If you don’t like carrying software on your USB because they will mix with other files, just like I worry. Then make a folder named “Power Tools” in your USB and move all these software there. You can later hide this folder and work with your USB like you normally would.
….And if you are an uber geek like me and always carry your iPod around, then it is better to carry these software in your iPod.
